CATHOLICS AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE ‘UNITE WITH LIGHT’ AMID COVID-19 CRISIS

—Archbishop Gomez and the priests of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels light candles as a symbol of unity, community and hope—

Although Catholics are not able to gather during the current public health crisis, Archbishop José H. Gomez and the priests of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels tonight joined Catholics around the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to ‘unite in light’ by lighting candles along the colonnade of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels facing the 101 freeway, as a symbol of unity, community and hope and especially in support for the medical professionals and all those caring for the sick amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

At 7 p.m. this evening, Archbishop Gomez imparted a blessing before the lighting of the candles for all those in the medical field and their families so that God may shine His light of hope on them.

“May God keep them in His loving care, and may the light of God shine on them,” said the caption to the video posted on the Archdiocese’s Facebook page @lacatholics,https://www.facebook.com/124319130912226/posts/3088009374543172/?d=n.

The Archdiocese invited Catholics through social media to unite remotely on April 1 at 7 p.m. by placing a candle outside their home, or in their windows, to “show their trust in the Lord.” The candle would serve as a symbol of Christ’s light in the world and in a special way honor the healthcare workers and medical professionals who are fighting on the front lines of the pandemic. 

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels has been lighting candles on the colonnade as a sign of the Church’s presence with her people during this time of crisis. “The candles are a sign of the prayers of the Cathedral’s priests, and a beacon of hope as we journey together through these most challenging times,” said Eileen Bonaduce, business manager at the Cathedral.
