THOUSANDS HONOR OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE AT ANNUAL MUSICAL TRIBUTE AND MASS AT CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS

—Celebration included singers Jacky Ibarra, Yesenia Flores, Julian Torres, Dueto Dos Rosas and Gaby Moreno, and veneration of the only relic in the U.S. of the tilma of St. Juan Diego— Thousands of faithful packed the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles tonight in a celebration honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe that culminated with midnight Mass celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez. “On this beautiful night, we thank God for sending his gift of Our Lady of Guadalupe, our mother,” said Archbishop Gomez. “She painted this picture of herself on the tilma because she wanted us to see her face, her compassionate and merciful gaze. She painted her own picture with roses, so we could know the beauty of her love for us. I look forward to celebrating this great feast with the people of Los Angeles and all over the world through our partners in the Catholic media.” The event was held on the eve of the Virgin of Guadalupe Feast Day, December 11, following a tradition in Mexico City where millions gather at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe where the tilma (cloak of St. Juan Diego where the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously appeared) is displayed. A half-inch square relic of the tilma, the only piece in the United States, is enshrined at a gilded chapel inside the Cathedral. Tonight’s celebration began on the Cathedral Plaza at 6 p.m. with Aztec and Matachines dancers. During this time, the faithful venerated the tilma relic through offerings of prayer and flowers. At 10 p.m., the celebration moved inside the Cathedral for a Rosary led by emcees Ernesto Vega and Lianna Rebolledo, and other invited guests, accompanied by Cathedral’s Spanish Choir. Mariachi Los Toros and guest singers serenaded the Virgin and sung “Las Mañanitas,” a traditional Mexican birthday song to honor the Virgin on her Feast Day. This year’s musical tribute, or serenata, included performers Christian singers Jacky Ibarra and Yesenia Flores, Mariachi singers Julian Torres and Dueto Dos Rosas and pop-jazz singer Gaby Moreno. The festivities concluded with a midnight Mass presided by Archbishop Gomez (homily as prepared follows in English and Spanish). The celebration was possible with the support of Catholic Communication Collaboration (C3) and Sprint, Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries, Tacos Gavilán, Vallarta Supermarkets, Mexican kitchen and bakery El Gallo Giro, Guadalupe Radio, EWTN español and María Visión. The celebration recalls the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego at Tepeyac, Mexico, in December 1531, when she left her image on his tilma, or cloak. A relic, or piece of the tilma inside the Cathedral was a present to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles from the Archbishop of Mexico City in appreciation and friendship after Los Angeles Archbishop John J. Cantwell led a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in the early 1940s. Given the natural agave fibers used to make the tilma, experts say it is miraculous that the relic at the Cathedral in Los Angeles, and the rest of the tilma in Mexico City, have survived for almost five centuries. **NOTE: Photos from the event are available upon request.** ________________________________________ Homily — Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe[i] (as prepared) Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels December 12, 2018 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, On this beautiful night, we thank God for sending his gift of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In times of persecution and in times of sorrow, she has always been our mother. She left us this picture of herself on the tilma because she wanted us to see her face, her compassionate and merciful gaze. So we could know the beauty of her love for us. We see in her eyes — a Mother who rejoices when her children are happy, a Mother who weeps when her children are suffering and bends down to take us by the hand and lift us up. In that beautiful reading tonight from the book of Ecclesiasticus, Our Lady speaks to us, she tells us: I am the mother of fair love, of the fear of knowledge and of holy hope. In me there is all the grace of the way and the truth, all hope of life and virtue. And of course, we know, this is how the Virgin appeared to St. Juan Diego — as a tender Mother. We remember the story, how she called to him from the top of the hill, called him to come and be close to her. She called him “Juanito,” her little boy, her dearest son. But, as we know, she comes not only as the mother of Juan Diego. Our Lady of Guadalupe announced that she is the Mother of all of us! We remember her words: “Truly I am honored to be your compassionate mother, yours and that of all the people that live together in this land, and also of all the other various lineages of men, those who love me, those who cry to me, those who seek me, those who trust in me.” The Virgin of Guadalupe is the Mother of God and she is the Mother of all of God’s children — your mother and my mother. The Virgin reminds us that beyond the color of our skin or the countries where we come from, we are all brothers and sisters. We are — every one of us, there are no exceptions! — all of us are children of one heavenly Father and we have the Mother of God as our mother. Brothers and sisters, all of us Guadalupanos: tonight Our Lady is calling us to listen for her voice, to be guided by her words and her example. Like a mother takes her child by the hand, let her lead you. Let her gather you up and take you into her arms. Let her lead you to Jesus! What is anything worth if we are not close to Jesus? If we are not close to his Mother? Our Lady of Guadalupe is calling each one you to do something special for her, just as she called St. Juan Diego. We remember the holy story, how she said to him: “Listen, my youngest son, know for sure that I have no lack of servants, of messengers, to whom I can give the task of carrying my breath, my words, to that they carry out my will. But it is necessary that you, personally go and plead, that by your intercession, my wish, my will, become a reality.” Brothers and sisters, Our Lady is speaking those words to each one of us tonight. She is telling each one of us, personally, — it is necessary that you go. No one else can go where Our Lady is sending you. The Virgin’s will is always to do God’s will — to bring Jesus to heart and every soul. This is what she was asking St. Juan Diego to do. And this is what she is asking you to do. You are messengers and missionaries, each one of you, each in your own way — you are called to carry Jesus Christ into every situation in your life. As we see in our Gospel tonight, the story of her “visitation” to her cousin, St. Elizabeth, when Mary walked into the room, carrying Jesus, everything changed! Elizabeth cries out in joy, the child, St. John the Baptist, leaps in her womb! This is what the encounter with Jesus does. It changes things. It brings joy. This is how Our Lady of Guadalupe wants us to live. Proclaiming Jesus Christ — all the great things that the Lord has done in our lives. The heart of our Mother is immaculate, and it is filled with sweetness. She is the Mother of fair love, beautiful love, a love that is divine. By her love shows us and leads us into the very heart of God. And this the kind of love she wants us to have for everyone in our lives. Our Lady is calling us tonight to be like Jesus in the way we think and in the way we treat other people. She is calling us to be like Jesus in the way we respond to the struggles in our lives and to the challenges we face in the Church. As the Gospel tells us tonight, Mary believed the word that the Lord spoke to her and she was blessed. Brothers and sisters, we are called to have that same trust that Mary had. Let us always remember her words: “Do not let your heart be disturbed. Do not fear. … Am I, your Mother, not here? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Are you not in the folds of my arms? What more do you need?” Our Lady goes with us. We go always in her gaze. She takes our hand, like a mother, and she guides us along the pathways that lead us to her Son. Always. Gómez Arzobispo de Los Ángeles Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles 12 de diciembre de 2018 Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, En esta hermosa noche le damos gracias a Dios por habernos enviado el regalo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. En tiempos de persecución y en tiempos de dolor, ella siempre ha sido y es nuestra madre. Ella nos dejó su imagen en la tilma porque quería que viéramos su rostro, su mirada compasiva y misericordiosa, para que nosotros pudiéramos conocer la belleza del amor que nos tiene. En sus ojos vemos a una Madre que se regocija cuando sus hijos están felices, a una Madre que llora cuando sus hijos están sufriendo y que se inclina para tomarnos de la mano y levantarnos. En la 1ª lectura que hemos leído esta noche, tomada del libro del Eclesiástico, Nuestra Señora nos habla y nos dice: Yo soy la madre del amor, del temor, del conocimiento y de la santa esperanza. En mí está toda la gracia del camino y de la verdad, toda esperanza de vida y de virtud. Y, por supuesto, sabemos que así es como se le apareció la Virgen a San Juan Diego, como una Madre tierna y cariñosa. Recordamos cómo ella llamó a Juan Diego desde la cima de la colina, cómo lo llamó a venir y a estar cerca de ella. “Mi Juanito, Mi Juan Dieguito … Escucha bien, hijito mío el más pequeño …” Pero, como bien sabemos, ella no solo es la madre de Juan Diego. ¡Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe proclamó que ella es la Madre de todos nosotros! Recordamos sus palabras: “Porque yo en verdad yo me honro en ser madre compasiva, tuya y de todos los hombres que en esta tierra estan en uno, y de las demás variados linajes de hombres, mis amadores, los que a mí clamen, los que me busquen, los que confíen en mí”. La Virgen de Guadalupe es la Madre de Dios y ella es la Madre de todos los hijos de Dios, la madre de ustedes y la mía. La Virgen nos recuerda que más allá del color de nuestra piel o de los países de los que provenimos, todos somos hermanos y hermanas. Cada uno de nosotros —¡sin excepción! — somos hijos de un Padre celestial y tenemos a la Madre de Dios como nuestra madre. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, a todos nosotros que somos guadalupanos, Nuestra Señora nos llama esta noche a escuchar su voz, a dejarnos guiar por sus palabras y por su ejemplo. Dejen que ella los guíe como una madre que toma a su hijo de la mano. Dejen que ella los levante y los tome en sus brazos. ¡Dejen que ella los guíe a Jesús! ¿Hay algo que valga la pena si no estamos cerca de Jesús? ¿Si no estamos cerca de su madre? Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe los está llamando a cada uno de ustedes para que hagan algo especial por ella, así como llamó a San Juan Diego. Recordamos sus palabras: “Escucha, el más pequeño de mis hijos, … es muy necesario que tú, personalmente, vayas, ruegues, que por tu intercesión se realice, se lleve a efecto mi querer, mi voluntad”. Hermanos y hermanas, Nuestra Señora nos está diciendo estas palabras a cada uno de nosotros esta noche. Ella nos dice a cada uno de nosotros, personalmente: es necesario que tú vayas. Nadie más puede ir a donde Nuestra Señora te está enviando. La voluntad de la Virgen es siempre hacer la voluntad de Dios, llevar a Jesús a cada corazón y a cada alma. Eso es lo que le pidió a San Juan Diego que hiciera. Y esto es lo que nos está pidiendo a cada uno de nosotros que hagamos. Cada uno de ustedes son mensajeros y misioneros; cada uno, a su manera, está llamado a llevar a Jesucristo a toda situación de su vida. Como vemos en nuestro Evangelio de esta noche —la “visitación” de Maria a su prima Santa Isabel— cuando María entró en la habitación, llevando en su seno a Jesús, ¡todo cambió! Isabel exultó de alegría; el niño, San Juan Bautista, ¡saltó en su seno! Esto es lo que causa el encuentro con Jesús: cambia las cosas, trae la alegría. Así es como Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe quiere que vivamos. Proclamando a Jesucristo, proclamando todas las grandes cosas que el Señor ha hecho en nuestras vidas. El corazón de nuestra Madre es inmaculado y está lleno de dulzura. Ella es la Madre del amor hermoso, de ese amor bello porque es un amor divino. Con su amor, ella nos instruye y nos conduce al corazón mismo de Dios. Y esta es la clase de amor que ella quiere que tengamos en nuestra vida para todos. Nuestra Señora nos llama esta noche a ser como Jesús en la manera en la que pensamos y en la manera en la que tratamos a los demás. Ella nos está llamando a ser como Jesús por la forma en la que respondemos a la realidad de nuestras vidas y a los desafíos que enfrentamos en la Iglesia. Como el Evangelio nos dice esta noche, María creyó las palabras que el Señor le anunció y fue bendecida. Hermanos y hermanas, nosotros estamos llamados a tener la misma confianza que tuvo María Santísima. Recordemos siempre sus palabras: “No se turbe tu corazón, no temas… ¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu Madre? ¿No estás bajo mi sombra? ¿No soy yo tu salud? ¿No estás por ventura en mi regazo? ¿Qué más has menester?”. Nuestra Señora va con nosotros. Vamos avanzando siempre bajo su mirada. Ella toma nuestra mano, como una madre y nos guía —siempre— por los senderos que nos llevan a su Hijo. Pongamos siempre todas nuestras esperanzas y temores a los pies de la Virgen. ¡Que Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! ¡Que viva San Juan Diego! ¡Que viva San Junípero Serra! ¡Que viva San Óscar Romero! ¡Que viva San Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio! ¡Que viva Cristo Rey! ¡Que viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! ¡Que viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! ¡Que viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!
