ANNUAL OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE PILGRIMAGE CONTINUES IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY IN NOVEMBER IN PREPARATION FOR THE PROCESSION IN EAST L.A.
In the spirit of the Synod of Youth that took place in Rome, for the first time the Pilgrim Images of the Virgin of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego will visit a school in San Fernando Valley, Pico Rivera and L.A.
After its visits to a cemetery and parishes in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, this year’s La Peregrina, a pilgrim image of Our Lady of Guadalupe used in celebration of the 487th anniversary of the miraculous apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego, made its way to Los Angeles County, where it will visit 15 parishes throughout November.
In the spirit of the Synod of the Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment that took place in Rome in October, for the first time this year, the images will visit a total of five schools in each of the pastoral regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties), including St. Charles Borromeo (North Hollywood-Nov. 12), Our Lady of Loretto (Los Angeles – Nov. 14), and St. Marianne (Pico Rivera – Nov. 30). Full schedules of the pilgrimage in English and Spanish are attached.
After remaining Oct. 27-31 in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, the pilgrim images continued their journey visiting St. Patrick Parish in North Hollywood (Nov. 6), then it will travel to Mary Immaculate Church in Pacoima (Nov. 7-8), and will make its way back to North Hollywood to St. Elisabeth Church (Nov. 10-11), and St. Charles Borromeo Parish and School (Nov. 11-13)
On Wednesday, November 14 the images will be welcomed by Our Lady of Loretto students who will do a flower offering at a Mass at 8 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and a teacher presentation about the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego.
The rest of the month the images will be visiting several parishes in L.A., Bellflower, Pico Rivera and Huntington Park.
The annual pilgrimage of the images serves as spiritual preparation for the 87th Annual Procession and Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Sunday, December 9 in East Los Angeles. The Guadalupe Procession is the oldest religious procession in L.A. It was established by Mexican Catholics who fled persecution by the Mexican government during the Cristero War in 1931. The Archdiocese’s annual celebration commemorates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe that recalls the miraculous apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Juan Diego at Cerro del Tepeyac (Tepeyac Hill), Mexico City, in December 1951, when she left her image on his “tilma” or cloak. Her image has been a symbol of unity, peace, compassion, and hope for people around the world.
La Peregrina, a pilgrim image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, is an exact digital reproduction of the original image in Mexico City’s Basilica, which has been blessed and touched to the original image. This year marks the 12th anniversary when the gift was hand-delivered to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by Monsignor Diego Monroy, then Rector of Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico City.
